As a photojournalist, my instinct has always been to “seize the moment of truth” as Cartier-Bresson has said, and let that moment define the story. In my art images I’ve added a mythic dimension, endowing real life with an epic understanding, and personal meanings from the heart. The politics of gender is the core focus of my work. My images suggest contrasting ways of looking at the body and the world though the transformation and juxtaposition of female and male identities. Larger than life photographs of Takami after her double mastectomy and the travesty He-She series of Frédéric depict a new mythology that discredits gender stereotypes. Challenging stereotypes is a physical reality for the women bodybuilders from my book, Strong & Sexy: The New Body Beautiful (Delilah Publishers, 1983, NY). The girls in 100% Pure Heroine and The Ladies Room also demand a new kind of female representation in history. |
