Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

—————

Burma has had a totalitarian regime since a military coup d'etat in 1962. After Daw Aung San Suu Kyi became the leader of the opposition party in 1989, she was placed under house arrest. Although her National League of Democracy, (NLD), swept more than 80% of the vote in the 1990 election, the junta refused to relinquish poser.

While in detention, Daw Suu, daughter of slain independence leader Aung San, received the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize for her commitment to nonviolent change in Burma.

International censure of the government's repressive policies led to her release in 1995.
