Trix Rosen Photography Ltd. was hired by CRCG to provide HABS Level 3 Photography Documentation of the Essex County State Penitentiary. One-hundred-seven large format images were commissioned for the Library of Congress and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) before the 32 acre site demolition by K. Hovnanian Companies.

The buildings include the Main Prison Building, Women’s Wing, New Wing, Hospital Wing, Power House, Warden’s House, Pump Shed, Root Cellar, Vehicle Maintenance Shop, Sign Shop, K-9 Unit, PS & G Building, Machine Shop, and Laundry. The masonry Main Prison Building and Power House date from 1872.
